ALBEMARLE HEALTH PARTNERS WITH 100,00 LIVES CAMPAIGN

Albemarle Health’s Albemarle Hospital is pleased to announce its partnership with the Institute for Healthcare Improvements 100,000 lives campaign.

The campaign is the first national initiative to save a specified number of lives by a certain date (June 14, 2006), using proven clinical practices and methods. There are more than 2,300 acute care hospitals in all 50 states participating in this program.

The Institute for Healthcare Improvements has developed an innovative, collaborative network and support system for all participating hospitals.

A team headed by Lindsey White, M.D., board certified cardiologist, was organized to implement proven, life-saving improving techniques at Albemarle Hospital.

The 100,000 Lives campaign was unveiled December 12, 2004, and has been endorsed by health care organizations such as the American Medical Association; the American Nurses Association; the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services; the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations; and the National Patient Safety Foundation. The program has also received funding support from several organizations, including Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, and Baxter International.

At Albemarle Hospital, we are focusing our attention on one significant performance measure that we feel will have a tremendous impact on healthcare outcomes in our service:

Deliver reliable, evidence–based care for Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI), consistently delivering key measures which include early administration of aspirin and beta-blockers, which help prevent patient deaths as a result of a heart attack.

Each year, more than one million individuals experience a AMI, and one-third of these people die during the acute phase. By implementing the standards outlined in this program, we will better serve our community, and reduce mortalities.

UPDATE:
The Institute for Healthcare Improvements announced in June that participating hospitals have exceeded that goal by 22 percent, resulting in the prevention of approximately 122,300 deaths. Because of our commitment to deliver quality patient care services to the residents of northeastern North Carolina, we share in their celebration.

The 100,000 Lives Campaign exceeded the Institute for Healthcare Improvements’ highest expectations. Participating hospitals have also proven it’s possible for the healthcare community to come together voluntarily and rapidly make significant changes in patient care. Albemarle Hospital will continue to adhere to these standards.
