NEW CT SCANNER
We
changed the way we look at things, when we installed a Siemens
Sensation 16 Multi-Slice CT Scanner in our Diagnostic Imaging
Department. This new technology enables our Radiologic Technologists
to manipulate images of the human body in ways never before
possible. They now have the ability, for example, to make
certain skeletal features disappear, revealing hidden problems
such as aneurisms, all in multicolored 3-D images.
The 16 Multi-Slice CT Scanner works much like the traditional
CT scanning machines, also known as CAT Scans, but with
improved speed and 3-D reconstructions done using a special
a computer software program. With the 16 Multi-Slice CT
Scanner, procedures that used to take 10 minutes or more
to perform, now take about one minute; and the physician
is provided with a clearer picture showing greater detail.
The new scanner takes 16 pictures, or slices, of the body
per revolution, up to four times the number taken by other
scanners. The high number of "slices" results
in detail so fine that technologists can now produce 3-D
images of the body that show detail such as wrinkles in
a patient's skin.
"It's state-of-the-art technology in CT scanning,"
said Fred W. Parker Jr., Albemarle Hospital's Service Line
Administrator for Diagnostic Imaging and Oncology Services.
"The images are sharper . the information physicians
can derive from it is just unbelievable."
Some patients also enjoy another benefit of the new scanner
and its advanced capabilities - in some cases the elimination
of discomfort associated with the length of certain procedures.
Albemarle
Hospital is one of only 15 hospitals in the state that use
the Siemens Sensation 16 Multi-Slice CT Scanner, and is
the only hospital licensed for fewer than 200 beds in eastern
North Carolina to have purchased the machine.
"This new CT scanner is an example of Albemarle Hospital's
desire to provide the best technology has to offer the communities
we serve," said Albemarle Hospital President and CEO
Sharon M. Tanner. "Having this kind of advanced technology
right here saves lives and improves the quality of care
patients can receive in their own community. The fact that
we are the only hospital of our size in the region, and
one of the few in our state, to offer this service speaks
to the commitment we continue to make to improve the health
of the people within our seven-county service area."
