ALBEMARLE HOSPITAL BREAKS GROUND ON $44 MILLION NEW CONSTRUCTION PROJECT
Albemarle Health's Albemarle Hospital broke ground Wednesday, June 13 on a $44 million construction project to build a new Emergency Department (ED) and Surgery Center. Albemarle Health received approval from the State of North Carolina in the spring to expand the hospital's ED, and enlarge its surgical suites.
The project includes a new Emergency Department with more parking spaces, as well as a new Surgery Center with eight operating rooms - all in a new two-story building addition. Construction is scheduled to be completed by summer 2009.
Albemarle Hospital's ED was designed to treat 25,000 patients a year; today the ED sees more than 34,000 patients each year. The new ED will double it's bed capacity, growing from 16 rooms to 34 treatment rooms; plus two specialty rooms for psychiatric patients and victims of sexual assault. The ED will expand to nearly 38,000 square feet and includes parking at ground level under the newly built addition.
The Surgery Center component of the project will feature approximately 31,000 square feet of space on the second floor; including eight new operating rooms; and four new Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) beds. The hospital expects to average 10,630 cases over the next nine years - more than 1,000 surgeries over what the Surgery Center was designed to accommodate many years ago.
The architect firm of O'Dell Associates, Inc. was selected to design the project, and BE & K Building Group will be responsible for construction management.
