$1 MILLION GIFT LEADS ALBEMARLE HOSPITAL TO NAME NEW SURGERY CENTER IN HONOR OF THE LATE ZACK D. OWENS, M.D.
The name Zack D. Owens means many things to the people of northeastern North Carolina, from renowned physician to community benefactor. Beginning in 2009, the name Zack D. Owens will symbolize the face of surgery at Albemarle Health’s Albemarle Hospital, when the facility opens its new Dr. Zack D. Owens Surgery Center.
Albemarle Hospital received a $1 million gift from the Zack D. Owens fund in September. Dr. Owens was a distinguished member of Albemarle Hospital’s medical staff for nearly four decades, and is remembered for his work as a pioneering surgeon, as well as for his family’s generosity toward the community.
“Dr. Owens meant so much to the people of Elizabeth City, Pasquotank County, and surrounding counties when he was in practice,” said Sharon Tanner, President and CEO of Albemarle Health. “Benefactor Marie Jones, Dr. Owens’ niece, continues his legacy of caring by providing financial gifts to those who teach medicine, and also those who provide care to the people of the Albemarle region. We are fortunate to have received this gift, and honored to name our new Surgery Center after Dr. Zack D. Owens.”
Albemarle Hospital’s new Surgery Center will occupy approximately 31,000 square feet of space on the second floor, including eight new operating rooms and 14 new Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) beds. The hospital expects to average 10,630 cases over the next decade – more than 1,000 surgeries over what the present Surgery Center was designed to accommodate.
The Surgery Center is part of a new construction and renovation project that will also feature a new 38,000 square foot, 36-bed Emergency Department.
