New Board Members

ALBEMARLE HOSPITAL AUTHORITY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
Albemarle Hospital, Elizabeth City
The Albemarle Hospital Authority Board of Commissioners has accepted the nominations of Claudie Mackey, Ed.D; Bettie Jones Parker; Ginger Parrish, Ph.D; Glover Shannon; and David Twiddy to serve as Pasquotank County representatives to its 15-member board. These five board members, approved by Pasquotank County commissioners, will begin serving three-year terms at the January board meeting.
Dr. Mackey is a distinguished professor and administrator at Elizabeth City State University. He currently serves as the Associate Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs/External Relations, and is a professor in the School of Education and Psychology. Dr. Mackey is a member of the Pasquotank County Board of Adjustments, is a former chair of the Elizabeth City/Pasquotank County Drug Task Force, and a former member of the North Carolina Governor’s Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Committee. He currently serves as the Assistant Athletic Director/Development, and is the head basketball and track coach.
Ms. Jones Parker is a mathematics teacher at Pasquotank County High School. She taught mathematics at Northeastern High School for 33 years, until temporarily retiring in 2005. Ms. Parker is a member of the National Education Association, the North Carolina Association of Educators, and Phi Delta Kappa (an international association of professional educators). She was named Teacher of the Year at Northeastern High School, and Teacher of the Year for the Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Public School District in 1991-92.
Dr. Parrish is the director of Albemarle Home Care and Albemarle Hospice, in Elizabeth City. She is responsible for all aspects of care, as well as managing staff for all Albemarle Home Care programs, including Home Health, Hospice, Adult Day Care, and HIV Case Management. Dr. Parrish is the leader of the Albemarle End of Life Coalition, and a leader in the end of life care issues throughout the Albemarle region.
Mr. Shannon is the owner of the Keystone Barber Shops in Elizabeth City and Edenton. He has served as a barber instructor for the North Carolina Barber Institute, and was named Barber of the Year by the North Carolina Barber Association and received the Best Barber Award from the Daily Advance. Mr. Shannon has served on the Historic Preservation Committee of Elizabeth City, was vice president of the City of Elizabeth City’s Planning Commission, and is currently a board member of the North Carolina Negro Master Barber Association.
Mr. Twiddy is the president and COO of Gateway Bank. He has served as the president of Gateway Insurance Services, Inc., and Gateway Investment Services, Inc. Mr. Twiddy was also the broker-owner of a Century 21 Real Estate office in Edenton. He is a board member of the Northeast Economic Development Commission, Albemarle Mental Health, the University of North Carolina Coastal Studies Institute, the State of North Carolina Rules and Review Commission; and is a foundation board member with Elizabeth City State University and East Carolina University. Mr. Twiddy is also a board member of the Pasquotank Solid Waste Authority and the Virginia Beach (Va.) Chamber of Commerce.

Together, we look forward to continuing the excellent work of last year’s board, and realizing Albemarle Health’s vision of being the health system of choice in northeastern North Carolina by providing high quality care to every patient, every day.”
Each board member serves one three-year term, and may serve a second term if selected for reappointment. The terms of David Harris, Ernest Sutton, Maryella Leigh, and Tyra Newell expired in December, and Patti Hamler resigned her seat on the board when she relocated out of the area.
Albemarle Health is northeastern North Carolina’s premier regional health and wellness provider. Facilities include: Albemarle Hospital, a full-service medical center in Elizabeth City, featuring critical care, surgical and diagnostic imaging services, and comprehensive women’s care; Regional Medical Center, in Kitty Hawk, which houses an outpatient surgery center, laboratory, diagnostic imaging services, and offices for nearly 50 physicians; and Regional Oncology Center, a state of the art cancer treatment facility located on the campus of Albemarle Hospital.
In addition, Albemarle Health offers primary care through Island Medical Center, in Manteo, and Gates County Medical Center, in Gatesville. The Albemarle Hospital Foundation Community Care Clinics, in Elizabeth City and Tyner, provide primary care and prescription services to the indigent, uninsured, and underinsured in our service area.
