WHAT IS SMALL INCISION SURGERY?
Small Incision Surgery has revolutionized the way some
surgeons operate. By using small incisions at the surgical
site, surgeons are able to precisely work on areas within
the body; smaller incisions often mean less pain, shorter
hospital stays, reduced recovery time, and minimal scarring.
In Small Incision Surgery, surgeons operate through one
or more small incisions, usually about a half-inch long.
Patient outcomes are generally better than, or at least
equal to, traditional surgery; and healing time is significantly
reduced, because there is less damage to surrounding tissue
and muscle.
You may have heard of this surgical style before. It’s
also called “Minimally Invasive Surgery,” “Band-Aid
Surgery,” “Laparoscopic Surgery,” or “Bellybutton
Surgery.” At Albemarle Health, we call this precision
surgery Small Incision Surgery because we believe it captures
the fundamental difference in surgical style versus traditional
surgery … a smaller incision equals big benefits for
our patients.
With Small Incision Surgery, you can expect:
- A shorter hospital stay. Patients often go home the
same day, or one day following the procedure, instead
of up to five-to-seven days with traditional surgery
- A faster return to things you enjoy. Many Small Incision
Surgery patients are able to get back to work, play, and
a better quality of life within two weeks, instead of
three or more weeks with traditional surgery.
- Little, or no, scarring. Small Incision Surgery requires
only a few small portals to the body – about a half-inch
long – versus incisions that can be three-to-seven
inches with traditional surgery.
- Reduced pain. If you’ve had traditional surgery
in the past, you know how painful little things like coughing,
or even moving your body to get comfortable in bed, can
be. With Small Incision Surgery, pain levels are far less
than traditional surgery, and last only a fraction of
the time.
We recognize that as a patient, any surgical procedure
can be intimidating. Even a simple surgery may bring plenty
of questions to mind. Here are 10 questions you and your
physician may want to discuss when deciding if Small Incision
Surgery is right for you.
- Q. Can my procedure be done with Small Incision Surgery?
- Q. If so, will Small Incision Surgery really shorten
my recovery time?
- Q. Can I get back to work sooner with Small Incision
Surgery?
- Q. Does Small Incision Surgery take longer than traditional
surgery?
- Q. Will my insurance cover Small Incision Surgery?
- Q. Have you done this procedure often?
- Q. Is Small Incision Surgery as safe as traditional
surgery?
- Q. Will it hurt less than other surgeries?
- Q. Will I stay overnight in the hospital, or will I
be an outpatient?
- Q. Can you see what you need to see, using such a smaller
incision?
