Dear Albemarle Health patient:
In order to provide a healthy environment for our patients, families, and staff, all Albemarle Health campuses and properties will become tobacco-free, effective January 1, 2008. This new policy applies to everyone, including employees, physicians, patients, and visitors. Therefore, after January 1, 2008, we respectfully request that you refrain from using tobacco products while on our campus/property.
For years, we all have read the documented evidence of the negative impact of tobacco use and smoking on health. Because Albemarle Health is the leading healthcare organization in our service area, we accept our responsibility to promote the health and wellness of our patients, visitors, employees, volunteers, and physicians. Albemarle Health must also be a role model for healthy lifestyles for others in our communities.
We know this transition to a tobacco-free organization will be more difficult for some than for others. In recognition of this, Albemarle Health is providing, at no charge, smoking cessation support to anyone who would like to quit smoking. If becoming tobacco-free for life is something you are interested in learning more about, please call 252-384-4224.
We are proud to join the 70 percent of North Carolina hospitals who have already implemented this policy; and North Carolina is leading the nation in establishing tobacco-free hospital campuses.
Thank you for your support and for complying with our request.
Sincerely,
Sharon M. Tanner
President and CEO
Albemarle Health
