DIAGNOSTIC IMAGING - STEREOTACTIC BREAST BIOPSY
In order to definitively confirm whether an abnormal breast mass is cancerous or not, a biopsy must be performed. Stereotactic breast biopsy is a safe and minimally invasive alternative to an open or surgical biopsy. Using a computer guided imaging system, samples of the suspicious breast tissue are removed by a hollow needle with the help of a vacuum assisted device (VAD). The samples are then sent to a pathologist who makes the final diagnosis.
Patients who have had a stereotactic breast biopsy report little to no pain. Because the incision is so small, there is usually no need for sutures and no scars are formed. The procedure is performed as an outpatient and typically lasts 30 to 60 minutes but can take longer. Normal activity is resumed the next day.
